A New Resource for AI Developers

Democracy Works has published a detailed manual for AI developers using the Democracy Works Elections API

Democracy Works is proud to announce the publication of “Integrating Election Data into Generative AI Tools,” a detailed manual for developers using the Democracy Works Elections API to power generative AI technology.

Our new guide features a set of best practices for building guardrails related to voting and elections into these tools and explains the risks that can arise when generative AI produces incorrect or misleading information. If consumer-facing generative AI experiences like chatbots lack sufficient safeguards, they can create content that misleads users about elections and voting. Inaccurate information about these topics can lead to a range of harms, including eroding trust in election administration and disenfranchising people attempting to vote.

However, generative AI tools also have the power to strengthen the election information environment if they answer users’ questions about these topics responsibly. That’s where Democracy Works comes in. Our API has the comprehensive data required to accurately respond to the election-related questions users are likely to ask generative AI tools, including inquiries about election dates, voting registration deadlines, and voter ID requirements. Our data covers thousands of elections each year, includes general information on voting and elections processes, and is continuously updated by our team of expert election researchers.

Our developer manual features an extensive list of voting-related prompts that users are likely to pose to generative AI tools and explains how to craft ideal responses using our elections data. We highlight which questions and prompts could be appropriately answered by calling the Democracy Works Elections API and list the specific API calls needed and the relevant data within the API response. We also explain which information requests should be met with referral to external sources and which requests should be declined due to safety concerns.

Since this list of prompts is thorough but not exhaustive, our manual also provides a set of general guidelines for responding to election questions and prompts. These recommendations can help developers create appropriate responses to all election-related prompts as the capabilities and vulnerabilities of generative AI continuously evolve. Partners can learn more about the importance of providing citations for data, contextualizing responses from our API, prompting users for their locations, and more.
